Start Practicing →Life Stages is a popular topic in the Sep-Dec 2026 IELTS test. The examiner might ask which stage of life you enjoy most, if you are afraid of getting older, or how you have changed since childhood. To score Band 9, avoid saying "I liked being a child." Instead, use natural, conversational phrases like formative years, golden years, or put down roots.
1. Do you enjoy your current stage of life?
Yes, I am really enjoying my late twenties right now. I finally have some financial independence from my work, and I feel much more confident and comfortable in my own skin than I ever did as a teenager.
2. In which stage of life do you think people are the happiest?
Honestly, I think childhood is usually the happiest time for most people. You are completely carefree, your parents handle all the serious problems, and your biggest daily worry is what game to play next.
3. What was the happiest stage of your life?
Probably my early university years. I had so much free time to hang out with my friends, and I got to experience living on my own without having to deal with a mortgage or heavy adult responsibilities yet.
4. What is the most difficult stage of life?
I think the transition from being a teenager to a young adult is incredibly tough. It's a confusing coming of age period where you have to make massive decisions about your study and career paths while still trying to figure out who you actually are.
5. Do you think people's personalities change at different stages of life?
Definitely. The core traits might stay the same, but people usually mellow out and become much more level-headed as they gain more life experience and face different worldly challenges.
6. What do you miss most about your childhood?
I really miss having absolutely endless energy and a completely unstructured daily routine. I used to just run around outside until the streetlights came on without a single care in the world.
7. Are you afraid of getting older?
Not really, I just see it as a very natural part of life. While I'm not exactly looking forward to the physical decline, I do embrace the idea of gaining more wisdom and eventually settling into my golden years.
8. What is your plan for your next stage of life?
In the next five years, I really want to focus on advancing my career and maybe buying my own home. I’m definitely ready to put down roots and build a solid, stable foundation for my future.
9. How is your life different now compared to when you were a teenager?
It's a completely different world now. Back then, my life revolved around high school drama and pleasing my peers, but now I’m entirely focused on my professional goals and maintaining a healthy work-life balance.
10. Do you think it is better to be young or old?
Both have their pros and cons, honestly. Being young gives you great health and endless opportunities, but being older gives you peace of mind, financial stability, and the invaluable wisdom of hindsight.
11. What life stage do you think is the most stressful?
Probably middle age, especially for the sandwich generation. You often have the intense, exhausting pressure of raising your own young kids while simultaneously taking care of your aging parents.
12. How do people celebrate different life stages in your country?
We have huge celebrations for major milestones like graduating from university, getting married, and turning fifty. Families usually throw large parties with lots of food and music to mark these major transitions.
13. Did you have more free time in your childhood or now?
Oh, definitely during my childhood. Now, my schedule is completely packed with professional obligations and chores, whereas back then, my afternoons were totally open for playing and exploring.
14. What advice would you give to someone in a younger life stage?
I would tell them not to rush growing up and to stop worrying so much about what other people think. Just enjoy your formative years and take plenty of risks while you still have a safety net to fall back on.
15. Do people in your country respect the elderly?
Yes, deeply. Respecting our elders is a fundamental part of our culture, and we often turn to them for advice because we truly value their extensive life experience and perspective.
